5 Reasons Why You Totally Need A Hobby

Hobbies are bit weird. They either come very naturally to us or we struggle to find our groove. Also what actually constitutes a hobby? Something you don’t get paid for? Something you don’t have to do? Can exercise be a hobby? Also what’s the point in even having a hobby?

1. Hobbies improve your cognitive brain function if practised regularly

It’s true! There are have been several scientific studies that have shown the benefits of long-term hobbies. This means screen free hobbies by the way – sorry computer game enthusiasts and movie buffs but you might need to add some crochet or sudoku to your hobby time.

2. Hobbies give you ‘you’ time

Other people tend to respect hobbies. A friend is less likely to be annoyed if you turn down a dinner invitation if you say you’re going to a painting class rather than sitting on your own couch in your underwear.

3. Hobbies help you find your tribe

Hobbies literally draw like-minded people together. It’s madness. Every hobby I’ve ever had – blogging, theatre and crochet – has left me with lifelong friends. If it weren’t for my hobbies 90% of my favourite people wouldn’t be in my life. Isn’t that a horrifying thought?

4. Hobbies improve your productivity

They make you get shit done so you can spend time doing them and they also keep your mind (and/or body) limber and moving.

5. Hobbies don’t discriminate

I read a fascinating study that shows that talent has no bearing on the effects of hobbies on a person’s mental wellness. It doesn’t matter if you’re awesome at your hobby or terrible at it – as long as you enjoy it they have the same effect. Isn’t that ace?

This week on Straight and Curly, Kelly and I tackle the topic of hobbies…

Also if you’re looking for a hobby… I can totally help you out.

Do you have a hobby? What is it? Tell me ALL about it please!

P.S Seriously if you need a hobby crochet is the best. But I may be biased.

Hobbies are great if you find your passion but like you say, if you don’t find your groove it can be difficult. The last thing you need in life is another thing you feel like you have to do. I feel like I should do something with other people because I work alone and most of the stuff I do in my leisure time is solitary stuff but it’d have to be something that gets me excited about leaving the house.

I agree, I wish I could really get into one like my husband who plays guitar, madolin, and basically anything with strings. I guess I’ll stick with reading until I find something else.

I just discovered your blog today and I’m absolutely in love with it!
the thing I have with hobbies is that I have too many or I am constantly changing them… so I don’t know how to feel about that haha.
