Lady Smaggle mourns for her childhood home…

Lady Smaggle mourns for her childhood home…
Carly Jacobs

My parents have sold the Smaggle castle right out from underneath me and I have to have all my scarves, shoes, bangles and books packed away within a week. What’s a girl to do? Procrastinate like a little bitch by dressing up and frolicking in the mess of course. Here’s a little tribute to my two favourite places in the whole house….

My bedroom

I have lived in this room since I was 9 years old. The white carpet is covered with glitter and eyeliner and the walls hold the marks of impromptu Flash Dance impersonations, failed cartwheel attempts and over-heated fragrant oil explosions. The window is framed with ivy leaves and the walls are painted a dark, sultry pink. If these walls could talk… I imagine they’d say the mostΒ extraordinaryΒ things about your Lady Smaggle. She never cries in public, she looks at herself in the mirror when she talks on the phone, when she’s really happy she says it out loud even if she’s alone and she does a fabulous Phantom of the Opera… complete with cape and mask.Β

The Bathroom

Can I tell you a secret? I have baths ALL THE TIME. At least three times a week. I take piles of books, fill the bath with bubbles and oils and sit in the delicious warmth until I wrinkle like a prune. This bath is incredible. It’s really long and really deep so you’re completely covered. I was terrified of this bath as aΒ child and now I don’t quite know how I’ll live with out it. I know I sound dramatic but it’s my safety blanket. Imagine if someone took away the ocean? Or chocolate? Or romantic comedies? It’s my haven where I escape for a few hours and when I emerge the world is bright again. Keep your fingers crossed for me that one day I’ll live in a house with a perfect bath again.Β

And my boxes still aren’t packed…

Love Lady Smaggle

    The bath photos are amazing!

When my parents sold my childhood home I was 18 and hadn’t lived there in a year, but I was still very cross. I would love to go back and buy it for myself one day.

Good luck in your search for the perfect bath. When you find it, try to make sure you have instant hot water to match – bliss.

Oh Lady Smaggle – we moved after 25 years in our first home – it was hell – relieved only by the fact our new ‘old’ house was twice as big. Our furniture looked doll-house sized, my pantechnicon of a wardrobe was accommodated and I thought we’d never fill it up. That lasted 2 years.
Funny thing is – as soon as you start removing your personal bits and bobs a home just becomes a house.

You look very glam in the first picture piling on all of your bangles – you could always do a Dries Van Noten and wear the rest on a cord around your neck! Your bath looks blissful – I love bathroom campouts.

    Good luck

Lady Smaggle, those pictures are stunning.
    You look absolutely beautiful.

Many of us know the pain of leaving our childhood bedroom, you’ve captured it well! My condolences…

I ADORE that bathtub!! And the bath photos are very 1950s fabulous!

  8. ambika 15 years ago

Ooo, I’m addicted to baths, too. I don’t get to take them so often but they are the best way of relaxing.

There is something very decadent about a bath isn’ there….I don’t take them enough…

  10. Vixel 15 years ago

I look in the mirror when talking on the phone too πŸ˜€ Fabulous photos, I don’t know how I’ll feel when my parents sell the house I grew up in. Even though I haven’t lived there for years I think it’ll still feel pretty weird.

I have some serious bath envy – the bath at our house is so tiny that I haven’t managed to fit my lanky giantess body in it since I was nine! If ever I manage to get in the realm of affording a house, I will definitely have bath tub high on my list.

P.S. I’ve been known to sing Phantom of the Opera when I’m alone in the house too πŸ˜€

that bath photos are fabulous!! our bath had mould growing in it, our landlord was nooot happy, we thought it was just dirty!

Ooooo nudie Lady Smaggle – love the bubblebath shot

I agree, the photos are fab. I hate that you’re losing your childhood home. πŸ™ I moved a lot as a child and there are houses that I still miss. But as someone said above, once your things are gone a home is just a house. The people and meaning of things in it make it home.

And I am completely jealous of that monster bathtub!

These are very, very beautiful pictures. And so bittersweet! When my parents moved out of the family home I grew up in, it was a really difficult experience. Good luck embracing the newness (and getting on without that amazing bathtub!)

gasp! you look ridiculously hot in black and white!

  18. Tara 15 years ago

Those bath photos are so so glamourous! You look amazing!
And I had to move out of home last year to go to uni in Perth, it’s not exactly the same as my parents selling the house but I can commiserate in a small way!

Everyone’s saying it… but it’s true! Those photos are so gorgeous! At least you’ll have those portraits of yourself in the tub to remind you of the “good old days”!

My parents sold the ancestral home while I was studying for my final high school exams. Not a good time.

Fabulous photos! You’re so lucky to have a personal photographer always to hand.

AAHHH!!! Love these photos and the adorable stories that accompany. So sorry that your castle has been sold, Lady. Any feelings about the new abode?

What a beautiful post! I love these pics, it does indeed seem rather perfect.

I hope you do get a perfect bath again!

You could always live underneath the bridge with Imelda and Yum Yum.

Ps – pic’s of you in the bath…CAMP

Awww – my heart will break a little when my parents sell the house. Adorable pics – I love the tile in your bathroom.

  27. tahda 15 years ago

that is MY dream bathtub! absolutely perfect.

I love these shots – too bad about moving but think of the possibilities of decorating a new place!

  28. Tabierre 15 years ago

    Beautiful bathtub!

I never (rarely) bathe – feel guilty about all the water wastage.

That said, fear not, I do shower – 4 min eggtimer, bucket underneath πŸ™‚

Lala – My new home is lovely. Tiny but light and airy!

Shannon – Thank you! I really want bathroom with the bath in the middle of the floor. One day…

E – Totally! Once I moved all my stuff out it was a empty house. And I was worried about missing my room but it wasn’t my room anymore. Thanks for the well wishes!

KD – I’m yet to test the bath in my new house but I’ll let you know how it is!

    Nadine – I LOVE it.

May – Why thank you. The time must come for us all though!

Jen – It’s the most glamourous bath in the world.

susie_bubble – Living in London I don’t know you survive without them. I need baths in winter to defrost.

ambika – Except I always stay in for far to long and get all pruney.

Vixel – How weird! It’s good to know I’m not the only one…

Scribbles – Really? Do you sing both Christine AND the Phantom? My falsetto barely reaches the top D but I can almost get there!

Selina – Oh ew! Was that at your dorm?

Eyeliah – It was! But all the stuff and people are coming to the new house so we are really only leaving walls. And my bath.

Dr Stumpy – Ha ha! You are so mature.

Heather – Believe me it deserves jealousy.

Cammila – Thank Mr Smaggle. He is the genius! I’m fine about it actually. I think the thought bothered me more than the action.

Fifi – Did you not know this already??? πŸ™‚ And… erm… doesn’t everyone?

Tara – Thanks! Everyone can understand my issue and it’s wonderful!

April – That was the point! So hopefully I will be able to get one again in the future!

Nadist – He’s not actually around all that often. I had to seriously drag his butt to my place to take the photos! He is generally very good he is just away a lot.

Gem – thank you… everyone looks good in black in white.

Sal – It’s lovely! Tiny but very light with a lovely garden…

    Marianne – I will. I’m destined to. πŸ™‚

Imelda Matt – Wow! That would be the BIGGEST BATH TUB EVER!!! Oh and haven’t I told you? I’m actually a gay man trapped in a woman’s body.

    Wendy B – πŸ™‚

Sarah von – That’s only been there for a year or so…but I love them too!

Tahda – I want to decorate a house for me so badly!

Tabierre – Me too! I often have them instead of shower though which is less water.
