I’ve been meaning to write about this for a while because I know heaps of people are curious or simply don’t know about SlimPasta. If you’ve been reading Smaggle for a while you’ll know I’m a bit of a carbo-phobe. I still eat good carbs like grains, oats and occasionally brown rice but it’s a very bad day if you see me eating white bread. I also try to avoid rice and potatoes, particularly at dinner time. This is why I’m so in love with SlimPasta because it gets tiresome eating your stir fry without something underneath it.
There’s two different varieties, Angel Hair (think vermicelli) and Spaghetti (think… spaghetti). One has twice as many calories than the other but at 6 calories and 14 calories per serve respectively it’s hardly worth considering. I just choose the most appropriate type for the meal that I’m preparing.
Here’s a few dot points to consider with SlimPasta
* It doesn’t reheat very well so try not to use the microwave as a short cut. It kind of dries it out but leaves it floating in a watery juice. Not very nice.
* You need to drain it very well. I also squeeze mine with paper towel to make it really, really dry because it has a high water content and it will make your dishes a little watery.
* It doesn’t absorb sauces so don’t expect it to. It carries the food rather than mixes with it.
* The Spaghetti one smells a bit weird but that washes away when you rinse it.
* You don’t cook it, you heat it in boiling water.
* The Angel Hair variety is gluten free. Bonza.
* Chew very carefully. The vegetable that SlimPasta is made from is called Konjac and has been banned in some countries because they made jelly candies from it and kids expected it to dissolve in their mouths like regular jelly only it didn’t and they choked and died. So… proceed with caution.
* The nutrition panel on these babies is out of this world. No fat, no sugar, minimal salt, extremely low carbs and calories.
It really does seem too good to be true doesn’t it? I keep waiting for someone to tell me it causes cancer or anal leakage but so far so good. Let it be known though that you will only be impressed by this product if you are or have been a low carb eater. I think it’s the most amazing product I’ve ever encountered but then I’ve been eating bolognaise sauce on spiralised zucchini for ten years so please do take my advice with a grain of salt. Or better yet, just try it yourself! I get mine at my local supermarket in the health food aisle, conveniently located near the gluten free food but you can look on the SlimPasta website for local stockists.
Do you have any amazing healthy food products that you’ve discovered recently? Please share!
Disclaimer: I received a sample pack of SlimPasta in a swag bag at the Kidspot Top 50 Blogger bash in Sydney and lugged it back to Melbourne with me. I now buy it every single week.

does it actually taste like anything or must you have it with really flavoursome foods?

It tastes pretty much like regular pasta just the texture is different. I’d never eat regular pasta plain because it doesn’t taste like anything either.

Here’s the link sweetpea. For stockists.

I’ve found it much easier to get at Woolies and Safeway than Coles. You can also get it online at these places in Australia.

Was up for trying it until I got to the ‘chew slowly lest you choke’ part. I think I’ll stick to regular ‘ghetti!

In SlimPasta’s defence, no one has died eating the pasta. Only the jelly candy made from the same vegetable. 🙂

…oh man, this stuff sounds awful.

just re-read the no/low carb junkie warning. I don’t eat much in the way of carbs, but I really prefer them to be the tastiest version I can find…I lose weight eating full fat because I rely on portion control and exercise, so I guess the appeal is lost on me.

As I said it’s not for everyone but I’ve been avoiding pasta for years because I don’t feel good when I eat it (even a small amount) and this isn’t too shabby a substitute.

Hmmm I know a few people who have tried this but found that the next day, ahem, “side effects” were not worth it! Hence I’ve never been game to try. Pretty much everyone I’ve spoken to about it has had bloating at gas at the very least and others much worse. Maybe that’s part of the whole chew it slowly thing too…
I know you love a bit of over share so you’ll have to let me know how you find it!

I haven’t experienced any side effects at all… I don’t think. Unless I’ve been blaming something else…
The main ingredient is water so you can’t go too wrong with that! Just give it a try. And if you get weird side effects… clench really hard.

Have been meaning to buy – I’ve been eating my spag Bol on grilled eggplant or baby spinach for far too long.

It’s totally worth a go. I actually really love it and probably have it around three times a week but you’ll really only appreciate it if you’re pretty hard core low carb. As I am. 🙂

Oh, yeh that’s me … only time carbs pass my lips is when I’ve had too many on a night out and the hot chips call me 🙂

Ohhh, I’ve been having this stuff for a while now. It’s great in a stirfry and okay with bolognaise, but you really need to have something flavoursome to mix it with otherwise it tastes a little yucky… Honestly it’s pretty good as a healthy alternative! I have not noticed any side effects….

Ok carb phobics, it’s 8.30pm, I had dinner 1.5 hrs ago, didn’t eat enough, and now I’m hungry. Normally I’d just go and eat some toast. What would you do? (I’m serious, I need to know! I must lack imagination because toast is the only thing that hits that in-between meal spot.) And do you drink wine? 🙂

I have to admit, I hate the texture of these for Italian food but they’re so great for Asian meals! I use a Spirooli with zucchini for spaghetti for asia food or I make thin crepes with powdered oat bran and egg whites and cut it into fettuccine strips for spag bol.
