Ask Lady Smaggle
Carly Jacobs

blog

There’s some weird stuff going on in my blog stats and I’m thinking that Cleo is responsible. I have had like, a bajillion people find my site through typing the address in the search bar. This never happens. So I figure I have quite a few new readers on my hands who are probably wondering what the hell I’m on about.

So for one week, new and old readers can ask me ANY questions that you want and I’ll do a big old narcisstic Guide to Smaggle at the end of it all.Β Feel free to throw in some interesting questions… In fact I’m offering prizes! Oh yes I am.

THREE luckyΒ question askers will go into the draw to win a Smaggle Pack – including Smaggle made jewels, treats and other delightful things! Oh my! Winners will be picked at random and anyone can enter. Flipping sweet.

I’ll also include a Meet the Smaggles section so you guys can put faces to the names in Smaggle Land.

Oh and if you ‘re too shy to comment or your question is a little embarrassing just email me…

Having said that I don’t really need you to ask me why it burns when you pee…

Let the question asking begin!

You have a week kittens…

    Lovely Lady Smaggle…

I must ask, as a fellow curly-girl myself, is your hair naturally curly (which I’m assuming it is) and what products do you use on it. Cause girl, you are totally rockin’ the curls. I had mine straightened a few months back but the curls just won’t be tamed (kinda like myself ;0) and I’m always on the lookout for the next great thing to use on my kinky crazy hair.

I love your style…love your blog.
    Peace, Wendybob

Here goes: How did you achieve such a lovely, elegant blog? No matter what you blog about, it makes me happy. Spill your secrets sister. Loving your style by the way. (And I actually did google your blog the other day. I was already a follower, however. I like the word follower. It makes me feel like I’m one of your minions. Haha. Cheers.

I am very excited about the who’s who of Smaggle land as over the past months of dipping in I have often got confused!

My question is from the depths of a girl (me) who is experiencing a wardrobe depression in the form of wanting to buy all these great new & exciting things I keep seeing and not having the dosh to do so!

What would be your best inexpensive tip of making your old wardrobe feel new so that you catch a glimpse of yourself in a window and think to yourself ” My! don’t I look fabulous today!” without spending much (or any) money!

  6. Scribbles 14 years ago

What gave you the impetus to move states and pursue your jewellery course? I mean, clearly you were following your passion, but how did you reconcile that with all the practical stuff?

  7. LaLa 14 years ago

Hello love – any tips on op-shopping? I am quite good at finding things but not so good at adapting them into my everyday wear…

  8. Lymie 14 years ago

What foundation items would you suggest for someone rebuilding their wardrobe from… well nothing?

  9. Emorliee 14 years ago

    Lady Smaggle,

You always have new outfits on with beautiful accessories and the like. How do you afford to keep up with the latest fashion?

Also, dressing for your body shape? This is something I have struggled with my whole life. Is there a special method, or formula for people to learn so that when they walk into a shop they know pretty much straight way what will look good, and what not to waste their time on?

    Hello Lady Smaggle!

I am massively in love with your blog, I envy your style (both in writing and fashion!) and your seemingly endless optimism – if only I could bottle it all!

Having just recently had a baby I am at the stage where I can say Asta La Vista to my maternity wardrobe and hopefully regain a much more flattering and trendy wardrobe – so my question – what would you recommend as the key items to any womens wardrobe?

Keep up the great work and I can’t wait to hear your responses to the many questions that I know you will be asked!! xoxox

  11. The Mumma 14 years ago

My question is: How on earth do you get your headscarf to do what it’s doing in this photo? I’ve been trying to achieve that look for weeks with little success.

  12. Lou 14 years ago

    Bonjour Lady Smaggle!

I have recently fallen quite in love with your blog, and spent a few sleepless nights reading back through all the archives.

My questions for you is: Do you have a special cup or mug or glass that you use? One that’s special enough that you have a nice little internal (or external!) tantrum when you notice someone else using it? And if so, what does it look like?

    Lots of love!

    Lou

    okmy questions are:

so what would be your ultimate dream outcome for your blog? do you have one? do you want to start selling merchandise? a book? a cookbook? a jewellery line? a reality show?
    custom made smaggle gin?…

I get the feeling you just started this more as a hobby but seems to have really taken off for you so are you thinking about a big bright blogging future out of this?

also… with one of my other blogging favourites galadarling calls her followers “nonpareils” as in the shiny little adornments on cupcakes..

what would followers of yourself lady smaggle be?
    smagglites? smaggloos?….

Hola you dizzyingly fluffly Lady…Greetings from Ireland πŸ˜€

I stumbl’d upon your delightful blog about 6 months ago and I adore saving up my subscription emails, and reading them all back to back on a wet (Ireland = ALWAYS wet) Sunday morning whilst beautifying myself…padding around with he heating turned upto eleven in a delicious silk nightie/gown combo and drinking Orange, Mango & Cinnamon tea….So…well…for being the icing on my Sunday Bliss-Cake I thank thee most heartily.x

    My question is this…

I myself make jewellery, beaded leather/felt/semi precious wire work/found objects etc…and have been rather enjoying the success of sales at my local community market, and have finally decided to take the plunge and begin listing on Etsy (Etsy = frickin’ drool-inducing awesomeness!!). As I usually make only two or three pieces in a similar style – and each of those being quite different in their own right – I find pricing very hard. From my years managing jewellery shops I know that things – in a retail sense – are usually only worth what people are willing to pay for them…
How can I learn to balance the passion/business acumen ratio and price fairly for the market , whilst remaining true to my craft and effort?

    I needs yo’ help, Mademoiselle!

p.s…Your candour-meets-can-do way of thinking never ceases to bring a smile to m’face, so …. πŸ™‚ …have one back from me.xx

  15. Nelly! 14 years ago

Geez! I so needed to know about that burning sensation… oh well!
I adore your blog & have been reading for about a year now & I have a few questions..
Smaggle – so cute! What is the story?
Like a commenter above – I have curly crazy hair but no control whatsoever so I continue to straighten. What’s your secret?
Are you a primary or secondary teacher? Why the shif to jewellery making?
Hmmm that should do it for now.
oh! last question – could I please win a Smaggle package? haha! Had to do it!

  16. Emily 14 years ago

I really like your personal style- it’s chic and accessible, and feminine but not fussy. Can you talk about how your style evolved? You seem to really know what you like and what suits you.
    Thanks!

  17. Michelle 14 years ago

I didn’t read the other comments, so apologies if these have been asked – but I’m curious about your day job, how you got there & what it consists of? We know bits and pieces from the blog, but I’m nosy, I want to know more πŸ˜‰

Also, do you plan on making jewellery your FT job any time soon?

  18. Kitty 14 years ago

I would like to know what Lady Smaggle plans to do when she grows up. Where does she see herself in 5 years? 10 years? And how does she plan to get there? And no wisecracks about Melbourne public transport – we all know it doesn’t work πŸ˜‰

  19. Mel 14 years ago

    Dear Lady Smaggle,

I would just like to say that I’ve adored reading your blog for at least a year now but have always been too shy to comment. But your urging has convinced me to make contact! So here’s my question:

I love love love your hair! I have very similar curls to yours in both style and length. I usually just stick half of it back or sweep it into a bun and I’ve honestly gotten super sick of the same old song and dance. I’ve been experimenting with ribbons and scarves and flower clips and always get compliments! Any recommendations on new styles for curly girls?

Much love from Colorado (and a fellow floppy 90’s boy hair fan),
    -Mel

  20. Nadist 14 years ago

Well, y’know, I don’t really care about getting all nosey on your ass, since if you don’t SAY it in the first place, I don’t need to KNOW it. So I don’t really have a question that I need answering, but I really, really want a Smaggle prize pack – so my question is ‘how many clothes do you own?’ Numbers please! How many skirts, dresses, cardis, tops, pairs o’ shoes?

(But of course I don’t want to know the answer that much, I just want a prize, haha!)

    Hi Lady Smag-face
A couple of questions for your lovely self:
Would you rather be a pirate or a ninja? Why?
Which are your favourite spots to socialise in the ‘Berra?

  22. Jess 14 years ago

    Dear Lady,

I would like to know who, in your opinion, has taken the greatest fashion risk in past 12 months and totally rocked it? And what was it?

  23. Jay 14 years ago

Best place/area in Melbourne to shop for affordable but still stylish clothes?

Annnnnnd … in your opinion, top ten staples/must haves for a rounded wardrobe?

  24. Lorra 14 years ago

Hello! The thing that got me attracted to your blog was “Why don’t you?” which was one of my favourite old columns in Cosmo magazine (I have no idea if they still have it).
So my question is, was that your inspiration? If so, good job. And I like your ideas better πŸ™‚

What do you like about living in Canberra (besides the obvious family/friend/life partner thing)? Anything that drives you crazy about the nation’s capital?

  26. E 14 years ago

    Dear Lady Smaggle

I don’t want to know everything about you in stalker-ish detail as I like random disclosures, that air of mystery and the way you often channel the divine Miss Vreeland. But I would love the Smaggle-made swag – so ….. the kaftan hour – is it now like, so over? Also – your thoughts on the kimono.

What character from the ORIGINAL cast of Beverly Hills 90201 would I be?

Yes, see, it’s a question FOR you about a show you LOVE; but somehow it’s still all about me *evil laughs*

Loving everyone else’s questions too – can’t wait to read the answers.

Just ‘coz I’m a bit of a nosy parker… and a romantic… my question is about you & mister smaggle. anything you fancy divulging: how did you meet? how long have you been together? you have mentioned a couple of times that he’s younger than you – how much? my brother’s wonderful partner is 6 years older than him, and my husband is 6 years older than me, so I’m not at all agist but just interested!

  29. Tara 14 years ago

What is your guilty pleasure music?

Also, as a random piece of information, I got season one of 90210 for Christmas and it reminds me of you when I watch it! I loved your episode recaps from when the remake was playing.

  30. Natasja 14 years ago

    Lady Smaggoooooollleee!!!
I saw you in my latest Cleo (that I bought on a whim because I can’t find Frankie anywhere around here – I’m currently in rural NZ) but have read your blog for ages.
I have no questions except : “please keep doing what you’re doing & don’t ever become a sellout?… not that I think you would.”
    The End.

i’m so happy for you that you’ve had a sudden influx in visitors, you definitley deserve it!
my question: i love your posts where you talk about fitness and your ridiculously healthy lunches and exercise sprees (i like exercising vicariously through you πŸ™‚ ), would you tell us how you developed a healthy balance between life and being healthy throughout your life until now, and any exercise/diet tips etc.?
    much love,
    jess

I’m a new-comer to your blog and you may have revealed this while you lived in Canberra but…do you spend more time north or south of The Lake?

  34. Eyeliah 14 years ago

I’d love you to share one of these recipes….. so my question is
What recipe are you most proud of and can you give us the step by step instructions to make it?

  35. SeedStitch 14 years ago

    Lovely Lady,

If you could wake up with any skill – not superpower, but actual skill, like knitting or something – what would it be? In other words, what would you love to be able to do really well without any practice whatsoever?

  36. Erin 14 years ago

    Hi from snowy Colorado…

My question is: Do you have someone whose blog you read or maybe a writer/author/artist, you love their style, you think they are witty and smart and you just think you could be friends with them, like drinking wine and talking?

  37. Jess HRH 14 years ago

I thought I’d change my name to make myself more distinguishable as I see there’s another Jess here. Nothing wrong with bigging yourself up everynow and again hey?! Tehe.

One more question – What’s in the Smaggle Pack? (Had to ask!)

  38. Desirea 14 years ago

What exactly are you hiding in that hair of yours?

  39. Sarah-Rose 14 years ago

    Ahh, I love question posts!
    1. What does Smaggle mean? why did you choose it as your nom de plume? do your family/friends know what it means?
    2. How would you classify your style? I tend to go off-duty-dominatrix/sexretary at work & blogger-casual in evenings/weekends, et vous?

  40. akb 14 years ago

    I have a few questions πŸ™‚
1.) would you blog if you had no audience?
2.) what would your superhero/alterego look like/dress like?
3.) if you could rock one look you currently cant for whatever reason (i cant rock dresses, because i havnt the presence of mind to sit like a lady, for instance..) what would it be?

  41. Beejay 14 years ago

    Hello Lovely Lady Smaggle,

Just wanted to thanks you for making me smile and be inspired by your candid take on life and ‘Why don’t you?” suggestions. You have a wonderful balance of spunk vs positivity and I love that your fashion tips, suggestions and ‘loves’ can be adorable and lavish without breaking the bank.

    So my questions are:

-What do you keep on your bedside table?
-You always look fab but are you nice to your clothes and follow -directions (eg, Dry clean only, Hand wash, iron inside out) or does everything get put in the washing machine?
-What was your favorite toy as a child and do you still have it?

    Thanks πŸ™‚

    eek amazing questions!

First off, a bit of a lurker, so I want to say thankyou for writing this awesome blog, I really enjoy reading it – it makes my afternoon when something new from you pops up in Google Reader πŸ˜›

I’m going to swerve a little bit out of the theme of the blog and start the hypothetical questions!
So, it’s a typical deserted island situation – what CD, book, and movie would you take? This is a very high-tech deserted island, hahaha.

  44. Miss Peregrin 14 years ago

If you had to leave three things in a time capsule to sum up who you are for future generations (well, they’d totally want to know about you!) what would they be?

Love your blog by the way. πŸ™‚

  45. ElizKM86 14 years ago

    Hey LadyS,

I think I know where the influx is coming from (because it’s how I found you!) Blogger picked its top 10 little known blogs for 2009. Your a favorite for (i think it was) the #2 blog on that list!

    Anyway…
I was wondering about your healthy eating habits. Where did it come from? How do you stick to it? (with the exception of your nighttime forays into cheese and wine) Any favorite standby meals?

    -Liz

  46. Amelia 14 years ago

    Hello!

I’m currently studying to become a librarian. As much as I love books and I love to read, I feel like I might not be making the right decision. Did you experience anything similar in your life, and are you happy with the choices you have made?

I read your blog almost daily. If you haven’t posted anything new I will browse the older posts. Seriously, it’s like a little ray of sunshine before I have to start my work day.

  47. Tameena 14 years ago

    1) Why Smaggle? Is that your surname?Whats your name?

    2) It is a depressing Sunday. you wake up and all you can think of is it’s work tomorrow. At this point, you know Carrie Bradshaw would be running down the street in high heels, fresh flowers in one hand, large coffee and new magazines in the other. she’s so cool. What do you do? where do you start? Go.

Maybe I’m cheating because I already asked one question…or maybe I’m just elated that my question was the FIRST one you answered…but I have another.

After reading your answers (you’re a doll, and a good person, to boot!) to everyone’s great questions, I want to know, if for some vastly unfathomable reason you ever move to the middle of West Texas, will you be my best friend?

  49. Sarah 14 years ago

    Hi Lady Smaggle!

I’m loving reading the answers to these questions – my whole weekend has been filled with getting-to-know-Smaggle-time!

You and Mr Smaggle seem to have such a wonderful, loving relationship. The way your write about him is quite heart-warming. My questions is: how did you and Mr Smaggle meet? And how do you maintain your beautiful relationship, especially long-distance?

    Thank you xx

  50. kerces 14 years ago

Hello there Lady Smaggle! I shall join the hordes in saying how much I am enjoying reading your answers and getting to know a bit more about you then what I’ve gleaned from your regular posts.

My questions are: how did you learn to be photographable like you are? Did your ability to pose so you look good and interesting every time come from acting? I’m much more at home behind the camera than in front of it (ditto in the orchestra pit than on stage…)

And what kind of reading material is always at home on your bedside table/under the bed/in your bag?

  51. Erica Lamb 14 years ago

Hello Lady! I love being able to ask people questions about themselves, it’s so fascinating! So, I came across your blog while looking for a DIY project and I found the necklace made out of tights. Which made me wonder, what are your favorite materials to make jewelry out of and what are some of the most unusual? What jewelry project are you most proud of yourself for making? Also, do you have a “favorite” outfit? Like the kind that ALWAYS makes you feel good.

  52. selina 14 years ago

if you could tell your teen self one thing, what would it be? also, what’s your favourite baking recipe? much love xx

  53. Helen 14 years ago

My question is: is there a link to your jewellery? Can we buy it?
Also, another question: when you pack to go away for a weekend/week/month, what is your fail-safe list of fashion must-haves in your suitcase?
    H <3

  54. Danielle 14 years ago

What was your first vinyl/cassette/cd purchase as a child? And what was the first/best/worst concert you’ve ever been to?

  55. stephanie 14 years ago

ok here’s my question…what are you deathly afraid of? (oh, and will you ever visit alaska? it’s cold here, you would like it)

  56. Sara 14 years ago

you have the best outfits!! where do you love to shop the most? i bounce between vintage stores and used clothing stores–its worth the sifting to find a really cute dress!
