Do You Love A Fancy Feed? Or Will a Sausage Roll Hit The Spot For You?

Do You Love A Fancy Feed? Or Will a Sausage Roll Hit The Spot For You?
Carly Jacobs

Sponsored by Nuffnang. Confession? I’m not a very fancy person. Not at all. My favourite food is porridge and my idea of ‘fine dining’ is any restaurant where my table has it’s own bottle of tomato sauce. I do appreciate good food though and if there’s one thing I can’t stand it’s expensive and pretentious restaurants. I don’t care if the dessert was sprinkled with 24 carat gold leaf, if it doesn’t come with a giant scoop of vanilla ice cream I’m not going to be happy.

So when Nuffnang invited me to write a post about The West End at Crown (read: VERY fancy new area at Crown on Southbank) I was pretty stoked as well as being slightly suspicious that the menu might fall into the too-fancy-pants-for-me category. They suggested that I have a drink at Lumia bar and then have dinner at The Merrywell. I checked The Merrywell menu online before I went and was very relieved to discover that nothing was served with ‘jus’*. Thank goodness. I booked a table for two and hoped that the chefs could rustle up a gluten free something for my coeliac date.

We arrived half an hour late because I was busy working my way through the cocktail list at Lumia – just FYI they have these amazing cocktails made from this ancient fruit preserve syrup recipe called ‘shrub’. The White Peach Martini will change your life, I swear. Despite our tardiness the hostess graciously kept our table.

There’s an upstairs and a downstairs area of the Merrywell, the downstairs is a more casual burger and pint kind of joint and upstairs is more of a red wine and fancy rustic potato chips vibe. I took my man for a belated birthday celebration so we went a bit mental and ordered a giant seafood stack with amazing potato wedges. We did the usual ‘no gluten‘ spiel at the waiter who told us we could have ANYTHING on the menu and the chef would make it gluten free, which we didn’t really believe. However, half way through our massive seafood stack this amazing antipasto plate came out with meats, dips, chargrilled vegetables and bread. We waved it away saying we hadn’t ordered it but the waiter insisted it came compliments of the chef. The bread turned out to be gluten-free and house made. Cue a very delighted coeliac practically inhaling these gorgeous fresh little doughy rolls.

Then the gluten-free food just kept on coming compliments of the chef. Rice paper rolls. Buffalo wings. It was amazing and kind of weird. Now I know what you’re thinking – they were buttering us up because I was writing a sponsored post about them. Not so my friends. I didn’t say that I was reviewing the place when I made the booking. We discussed the onslaught of complimentary food and came up with a few explanations.

1. My compulsive checking in had earned me major browny points. The West End has an app that offers deals when you check in and I got a little obsessed with it. They have offers available on the app like cocktail hour specials and dinner deals. I also checked in on Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter and tagged a few photos in Instagram. My profile picture looks, surprisingly, a lot like me so maybe they thought it was a good idea to pamper to the social media wizard on table 34.

2. They thought we were Helena Bonham Carter and Chris Martin having a steamy affair in a foreign country.

3. The chef was a master of gluten-free cooking and wanted us to be guinea pigs.

We decided it had to be the third option and that the chef wanted to show off his cooking chops to seasoned non-wheat eaters. We were immensely impressed. To the point where I was shouting in to the kitchen that the chef should open a gluten-free bakery because he’d make a fortune selling his french sticks and mini hamburger buns.

We capped off the night with a sneaky red at Lumia and grabbed a takeaway coffee from Cotta for the walk home. Southbank is simply stunning in winter with bare trees swathed in fairy lights and the Yarra twinkling under the stars. It’s breathtaking. The West End at Crown is this bizarre little pocket of awesome with a bar, restaurant, cafe and it’s own corner of the casino. * I’m incredibly uncultured so to me ‘jus’ means ‘liquid’. So a strawberry ‘jus’ is just runny strawberries. Garlic ‘jus’ is just runny garlic.

Hahaha! I laughed at the Helena Bonham Carter/Chris Martin comparison (because it’s ridiculously accurate!). But a very excellent review, it sounds like it was delicious!

My partner and I were at the Merrywell just a few nights ago! It feels like it’s being name dropped heaps lately, as Buddy Franklin was there the night after us and tweeted about it! But we loved it in any case with its absolutely beautiful interior, especially the floating lights and fireplace! I had the fried chicken waffles, more out of sheer curiosity to be honest, but they were spectacular and went together perfectly. The Merrywell felt like a great mix between fancy feed and burgers and fries… but at the end of the day, I love a bit of fancypants-ness to mix things up a bit!

Embarrassed to admit I don’t know who Buddy Franklin is! Eeep! I’m not really a Southbank gal at all but we loved it.

Oh yes, I love a fancy feed. Bring on the jus and celeriac purĂ©e! But it’s something truly amazing when a fancy schmancy place has a burger and fries or bangers and mash on the menu. It’s like the lettuce leaf has been strategically placed with tweezers and the mash is 50% double cream. Best of both worlds!

Celeriac puree? Is that even a thing?

I’ll admit to a bit of skepticism about gluten-free baking

I have to say, I am a little of column A and a little of column B on the eating out front. For foods like Lebanese, Vietnamese or Chinese I find that cheap holes in the wall are so often better than the trendy versions of the same thing. I’ll go out West, far West, for a great $20 Lebanese meal that takes me straight back to the Middle East. On occasion, though, I do love a bit of fancy pants dining somewhere like Toko, Nobu or Rockpool. Overall, though, my tastes tend more towards simple and delicious than gold leaf for the sake of gold leaf.

The review is great – I really want to go to this Merrywell place now!

I’m a MASSIVE vietnamese fan. It’s all about Victoria Street in Richmond.

I consider myself a decent cook, not of the master chef contestant variety but I do put a tasty meal, on the table every night, so when I eat out I want something fancy pants that is beyond my capability to cook – but real food  not that chemical gastronomy stuff.  My fella on the other hand is a parma and chips guy, and because he doesn’t do the cooking at home (and haven’t eaten is cooking I don’t want him to), doesn’t really see the point of eating out, so when a place provides both fancy stuff, and something basic and filling for him, then it is a winner. I think we might have to check out  The Merrywell on our next date night.

Good call on a restaurant being able to provide something that you can’t. That’s why I go for seafood, I’m so crap at cooking it.

I also cracked up at the no 2 explanation for the generosity! 😀 and the place sounds great, I LOVE eating out!

I don’t care if it’s sprinkled with jus or wrapped in layers of filo pastry, I love good food in all its forms. The best thing I’ve eaten in the last week was a toasted sandwich made with leftover roast lamb (and gravy) – SO GOOD. I love a fancy restaurant, but I’m with you – the menu has to be intelligible and has to be real. And if there’s not a chocolate mousse/mud cake/torte/flan on the dessert menu I’m going to be pretty cranky. The Merrywell sounds amazing – as if I needed another reason to love Southbank at night!

Although I can wax lyrical about kingfish cervice and soba noodle salad, all I really want to eat is meat covered in cheese with a side of meat and cheese. Fancy is great, but fat is better.

I live for food & love getting tarted up for a fancy shmancy meal, but being the type to call a spade a spade, as soon as the menu starts spouting off about candied whatsit & jellied so-&-so (& that’s for mains) I immediately think “what a wank” & long for a dirty kebab.

I love fancy versions of simple food. Like a kangaroo steak sandwich with balsamic caramelised onion and herb fries with garlic aioli (a burger and chips) or cabernet paste (solidified red wine). Basically if Maggie Beer makes it or sells it in fancy little containers in the supermarket, I want to eat it.

Bit of both but I’m definitely curious about the GF bread as I’ve been baking my own bread. The 3rd loaf was a failure as I went crazy with nuts and seed thinking I am proficient enough (after making 2 great loaves!) to improvise. Not! Making GF bread is next on my list. Will send you a loaf if it’s a success and if you’re interested. Does that sound like a bribe, nooooo…… ; )

Fancy food intimidates me.  I get so anxious when I have to order from a high-end menu, because I don’t know what most of the items even are, let alone how to correctly pronounce them when the waiter takes my order.
Give me newspaper-wrapped fish and chips any day.

I do love to be treated, or treat someone to a ‘fancy’ night out and am not offended by small and delicious serves of food being outsized by its serving vessel… But, I am super easy and happy when it comes to the cheap and the ‘sausage roll’ of the food world, depends on mood (Shanghai Dumpling Village vs. Vue de Monde), occasion (cocktail restaurant vs pub) and hip pocket (Vinnies Night Van vs the high end, which I can’t even afford to mention). Good write up lady Smaggle, really nice overview of what sounds like a wonderful night. Great to see that a restaurant was looking after food needs (not just your date’s intolerance to all that is gluten, but also your sampling of the restaurant) so well! Jx

I’m not much for fancy food…but really depends what I can order that is gluten free! I’d kill for that platter and lobster again!
