What to Wear on a Long Road Trip

I

spend a lot of time in the car. I live in Melbourne but both my family and Mr Smaggle’s family live in Canberra so we do the seven hour drive every few months and it’s the longest, most boring drive in the world. I’m a champion of road trip dressing because I once wore a polyester playsuit in the car in summer, for seven hours straight. That’s really a mistake you only make once. We’re currently on a road trip around California and Nevada so my tried and tested road trip outfits are getting quite the workout.

Wearing

Dress from FCUK – I got this for an absolute steal of $29 and I’ve worn it to death. I have an almost identical one from Muji. I will never stop buying long sleeved t-shirt dresses. They’re so versatile and comfortable.

Shoes from Merrell – I bought these in black last summer and I’m totally in love. I found the tan version for half price in a dodgy outlet mall in Vegas and I snapped them up immediately. Good quality flats that can withstand all my walking are like the holy grail of shoes for me.

Tips for what to wear on a long road trip…

– Wear layers. A dress you can put tights on underneath or comfortable jeans you can wear with a snuggly cardigan.

– Wear slip on shoes and pack socks. That way you can be in barefoot comfort for most of the trip but also your feet won’t get cold.

– Wear something loose fitting. You don’t want to be squirming in you seat because your pants are cutting off your breathing.

– Ditch the accessories. I tend to get a puffy and uncomfortable on long road trips and I don’t need the hassle of my rings getting all tight or falling asleep against the window with my earrings digging in to my ear.

– Pack a cardigan or a wrap. They’re awesome for warming you up when you’re cold but they can also block the sun on bare legs so you don’t end up like a lobster at the end of your trip.

– Wear cotton… otherwise body swamp will get you.

This outfit was worn for a long road trip from Boulder City (just outside Vegas) to San Diego. We drove through the desert all day, listening to ZZ Top and There’s No Such Thing As A Fish, snacking on carrot sticks and jalapeño philly cheese dip. I’m so scared about going back to Australia next week. I’ve become addicted to jalapeño flavoured snacks and you just can’t get them in Oz. Sob!
