Very Excellent Habits

What models used to look like…

A few evenings ago I was reading this fabulous little book about the history of Chanel (more on that later!) when I stumbled upon a picture of Claudia Schiffer modelling for Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, circa 1993. That’s her in the white dress below. She has thighs. And tits and hips and cheeks. I was positively shocked at how much the ideal model shape has changed in just over 10 years. Look at Cindy in the middle. Look at those thighs! Don’t you want to just bite into them like a big old chicken leg? She would be shot dead on a catwalk today. Want to know why? Because she is too damn gorgeous. Like the other models of the early 1990’s they distracted people from the clothes. Their creamy skin, womanly curves, gorgeous faces and killer racks had people hankering after the model and not the dress. So designers got jack of this and started sending human clothes racks down the catwalk to the detriment of women through out the world. Lets take a walk down memory lane where models looked like women, not skeletons draped in skin…

Christie, Linda, Cindy, Naomi and Claudia. Top earning models of the early 1990’s. Remember the days when size 10 was considered really really slim? When people would exclaim ‘Oh my god she was TINY! Like a size 10!’. What the hell is a size zero?

Okay, I think we can all do without the front-ways wedgie but look at that arse! You could totally sink your teeth into it. How nice is it to see a model in a swimsuit with out razor blade hip bones cutting through the Lycra?

The magic foursome. Linda, Cindy, Naomi and Christie. Models with muscle tone and breasts. Mental.

I miss the days when a healthy, athletic body was considered the ultimate. Remember when models would release diet books and exercise videos to promote healthy living? When idolising a model meant working out everyday and eating healthy meals and not living on champagne, cocaine and cigarettes? Oh and remember when models were grown ups? Women in their mid-to-late 20’s? And some even had families and babies? They were also models. They didn’t want to be photographers, designers and stylists. Models today are too thin, too cool, too interested in being uber quirky.

I know it’s an old argument that every one is sick of hearing but look at this…

It’s so bizarre.

Over to you… Do you miss Cindy Crawford’s Buns of Steel? And full bosomed super models doing Wonder Bra ads? Do you miss the days when models had thighs that touched at the top and bums that wiggled when they walked? When is was beautiful to be fit and healthy?

I sure do…
