Tights: Where To Buy Good Ones In 2018

If you’re new around these parts, I need to tell you something.

I don’t wear pants. Well, that’s not entirely true. I rarely wear pants. They just don’t feel right on me for some reason. It’s a long torso thing. I’m just built for dresses.

This means that every year, I stock up on warm tights to wear with all my dresses to get me through winter. Most of the time this isn’t a difficult task – I just pop to Big W or Kmart and stock up on lots of different kinds of tights in lots of different colours.

This year? No such luck. I went to Big W, Kmart, Target, Coles and even Harris Scarf to find tights in any colour other than black and I came up totally empty. I am not even kidding, I’ve spent the last three weeks maniacally searching for wool or wool blend, warm winter tights, with feet that aren’t black and they’ve been impossible to find. I even looked on Amazon, eBay and Etsy and came up with nothing. Finally, I went into Myer in the CBD and they totally delivered. I also found a few random pairs here and there that have proved to be rather excellent choices.

As a tights aficionado, here are my winter tight recommendations for 2018.

Muji

I bought their cotton blend tights with the right angle foot design over the weekend and I pretty much haven’t worn anything else since I bought them. Have you ever worn right angle socks or stockings? They’re unbelievably comfortable because guess what? Our feet are at right angles, so they don’t end up all bunchy and stretched around the ankle like the ones where the feet are in a straight line down from the leg and there’s just a bump where your heel should go. I bought the non-ribbed style and I tried to go back and get the ribbed style but they’re sold out. It’s my one complaint about Muji is that I’ll buy something from there, love it, go back to buy ten more of the incredible thing and they just never restock them. I’m IN LOVE with their cotton midi style underwear and I’ve been in to Muji about a dozen times planning on buying 10 pairs and they never have them in stock beccause some other chump has gone in before me and bought them all. Be less awesome Muji. You’re breaking my heart.

Mesop

These were purchased on a very recent trip to Bendigo. They’re not super cheap at $40 per pair but they’re a merino blend which makes them super warm and soft. I don’t mind spending a bit of extra coin on warm, good quality tights. If I get a ladder in these, I won’t be happy though. I’m being super careful with them.

Ambra

I bought these simply because I wanted a lighter grey pair and these are a lovely, soft cotton blend. Ambra is a brand I’ve loved for years. They have excellent singlets, thermals and affordable shapewear. I have several of their slips and wear them constantly and so far, the tights haven’t disappointed. Ambra does a school range of tights that are basically indestructible. I wasn’t in the market for black tights this winter but if I was, I’d get the Ambra school ones, they’re ace. I also bought a few of their fleece lined tights this year and they are AMAZING. Very comfortable, super warm and they don’t cut you in at the waist like a Christmas ham wrapped in string. Excellent.

Columbine

I’ve been a fan of Columbine for years, mainly because they make tights in colours that aren’t black, grey or navy and they appear to be the only affordable brand that does this. I really wanted a pair of mustard tights this winter but I could only find them in one-size fashion style brands and one-size never fits me because I have a long, sausage dog torso. These burgundy ones were a pretty good alternative and they’ll mix up my winter look a little so I’m not wearing black and grey all the time.

Bonds

I already had a few pairs of black tights leftover from last winter so I wasn’t really in the market for new ones but these were just so lovely and snuggly looking I had to grab them. Also Bonds tights last for AGES. Bonds anything lasts for ages really.

This outfit was worn for a day of travel to Sydney to for some blogging business and then back to Canberra to spend some time with my fam. I’ve taken the day off today and Mama Smaggle and I off to the Cartier exhibition and a lunch date for a belated Mother’s Day celebration.
