5 Things You Need To Watch Right Now

I watch a lot of movies and TV type things. When I say ‘watch’ I mean that very loosely. I generally have something on in the background while I’m working on non-writing stuff. Scheduling social media, taking photos for Instagram and designing stuff for Crochet Coach. I like music but I struggle to find enough variety of stuff I like and I also really enjoy singing, so familiarity plays a big part in my music tastes.

With TV or movies, there are heaps of streaming services so I can always find something awesome (or totally trashy!) to have on in the background while I do other stuff but I’m very fussy about the stuff I actually recommend to people. Now that I’ve filled you with false hope, here are some things you need to watch…

1. An Honest Liar

This is a very beautiful documentary about a magician called the Amazing Randi and his crusade to protect people from devious psychics and master manipulators. It was just such a joy to watch and there’s a whole, weird bit that involves the Australian media in the 80s which is just fascinating. I can’t wait to ask my parents if they remember it

2. Stranger Things

I find it really weird when everyone is talking about a show and it makes some people go ‘Oh I have NO interest in watching that!’. I say, watch one episode and if you don’t like it, stop watching it, but at least give it a go. Stranger Things isn’t the best TV show I’ve ever watched but it’s an absolute hoot and super nostalgic for any kids born in the 80s. I loved it and I never let the popularity of anything deter me from loving it. Like Nickelback. I don’t understand why everyone hates them. I certainly don’t love them but I’ve definitely heard worse bands. *shakes head at the state of the world*

3. Tickled

This documentary is bonkers. It’s about a journalist from New Zealand who discovers a professional tickling league and decides it’s the perfect topic for his next story. So he starts researching the people who started the league and shit gets really weird. It’s so interesting and batshit crazy – you have to see it.

4. You Can’t Ask That

This show is on ABC and it’s gold. Each episode has a theme like Muslims or Sex Workers and they get asked anonymous questions that theoretically everyone would like to know. I just loved it. It was candid, respectful and really very beautiful. My favourite part was when a Muslim woman was asked what the ‘worst’ part of her religion was and she whispered ‘Bacon… it smells so good!’. It was just a lovely show all around.

5. On The Road

This one only applies to fans of The British Office. It was actually pretty good. My only complaint is that Ricky Gervais gets way too sentimental when he’s not supervised by Stephen Merchant (Hello Derek!). Having said that he’s a shit hot performer and seeing him bring Brent to life again was thrilling. It was a hard project to undertake and probably unnecessary, but it was fun and I definitely got a few belly laughs from it.
