3 Massive Sleep Mistakes You Don’t Know You’re Making

I

used to be very awesome at sleeping and then for some reason I got really bad it. So I did what any normal person with an obsessive Type A personality would do – I read everything I could about how to have a good nights sleep. I still haven’t mastered this completely but I do have a big list of tips I like to refer to when I’m having issues with the old shut eye. These are some sleep mistakes you might be making as well.

You’re eating late night caffeine loaded snacks

Chocolate has about 10mg of caffeine per 50gm serve which is equal to about a fifth of a cup of coffee. It might not seem like a lot but if you have a sneaky chocolate treat before bed most nights it might be giving you too much of a buzz to fall asleep. Coffee, tea, chocolate, biscuits and ice cream should all be avoided before bedtime.

You’re not paying attention to your temperature

It is physically impossible to fall asleep unless your core body temperature drops. This is why it’s so damn difficult to fall asleep in summer. If you struggle to sleep every night, chances are you’re too hot. Try sleeping in less clothing, ditching your giant blanket and cracking the window open. Keeping yourself cool is essential for getting a good nights sleep.

You won’t put your damn phone down

The blue light emitted from most screens increases alertness and prevents you from winding down. It’s also pretty difficult for your brain to comprehend that it’s sleep time when you keep flashing yourself in the face right before bed. I have totally banned screens from my bedroom this year (except my Kindle which doesn’t count because it’s backlit and my eyes think it’s paper) and it’s been the best thing I’ve ever done. My phone isn’t even allowed in my bedroom anymore and my sleep quality has dramatically improved.
