Healthy Winter Breakfast with Weight Loss Benefits

Healthy Winter Breakfast with Weight Loss Benefits
Carly Jacobs

I’ll admit it. I’m a miracle food product whore. If Miranda Kerr attributes her child like hips and glowing skin to the consumption of gogi berries at 4 minute intervals for 24 hours a day then I’m online in a heart beat getting bulk bags shipped from China. For real.

I do experiment with my daily eating quite regularly and if some health nut celebrity suggest drinking cabbage juice or sprinkling powdered seaweed on my cereal I’ll give it a try but in my general day to day eating habits I try to avoid refined carbohydrates, sugar, wheat and dairy. I love food that tastes like food. Above all else I rarely, if ever eat packaged food.

Through out summer I would have an oat milk, raw egg and blueberry smoothie for breakfast but it’s so fracking cold at the moment that the thought of drinking a smoothie makes me want to set myself on fire.

Here’s what I’ve replaced it with

Oat Milk and Prune Porridge

Ingredients

1/3 cup of quick oats

3/4 cup of oat milk (the irony of using oat milk with oats only just hit me)

Five pitted prunes (I’m eating prunes because I recently read French Women Don’t Get Fat. It’s divine. The French Women Don’t Get Fat Cookbook is also awesome.

1 tsp white chia seeds (These are a ‘super food’ that aid digestion, promote weight loss and are basically little fun bags full of awesome things like calcium and fibre.)

1 tsp LSA (LSA is linseed, sun flower seed and almond meal. It cleanses and detoxes your liver as well as improves your ability to metabolise fat.)

Drizzle of honey (but only if you’re a baby and can’t hack unsweetened porridge)

Method

1. Place oats and milk in a small saucepan and place over medium heat. Stir until thick and creamy, about a minute.

2. Serve in a bowl with chopped prunes, chia seeds and LSA sprinkled on top.

3. Freshly brewed coffee optional.

Side note – This bowl of gold will keep you full for hours and that’s coming from a chronic snacker. Also it makes your number twos extraordinary.

Love

Smaggle

My brekky is very similar.. but I use Quinoa instead of porridge – it is my latest wonder-food addiction : ) Don’t get hungry til 1.00pm… supergrain!

        Hey Carly,

I figured you live in the neighbourhood so I thought you should know…

If you fancy quinoa there is a super cheap organic dry goods on Johnston St opposite the Goodlife Gym. They sell quinoa flakes and aramanth flakes which are both great for brekky. I mix the two with some quick oats and chia in a massive jar. Shake it until it’s mixed really well and then in the morning, add water cinnamon, frozen berries and a dash of salt. I whack in the microwave whilst dealing with my crumpled morning face and then my delicious, protein-rich brekky is good to go. I bought about 3 weeks worth of organic brekky ingredients today (plus pittted prunes a la Smaggle) and it was $15.

        Too easy 🙂

What exactly do you mean by “extraordinary”? I don’t need graphics, but it is a bit vague.

I love how something like “oprah poop” is so universal; I also find it disturbing.

Yes food posts please! And also a daily outfit post 🙂
Very similar to my breakfast, I’ve been eating museli with prunes and enough nuts and seeds to make me a parrot, every day for ages. The best. No snacking for hours.
And also eliminating processed carbs and sugar has done wonders! So, yes, more food 🙂

Wooh! I gave this one a go and I reckon it ups my full-ness to 3-3.5 hours. Sometimes I snack 2 hours after brekkie, shame!
just wondering why you use oat milk? I go for the calcium enriched vitasoy, comparing the two, the soy has more protein, fibre, and less fat… which makes sense, a soy bean having higher nutritional content that oats…

also I bought black chia seeds instead of white ones…. is there a difference that you know of?

I don’t know of any difference between black and white chia seeds!

I went on to oat milk because I read a horrifying study about the second rate soy products that are available in Australia and the more I read about (western) soy the less interested I am in consuming it. Also I read a the Dukan Diet and he’s all about the oats. Oat milk is just my favourite non-dairy milk. I can’t stand rice milk and soy has a shit reputation. That equals oat milk or selling my first born and buying expensive almond milk!

Oh, I’ll have to look into soy milk then. I added chopped walnuts to this recipe – amazing! Also, the most important difference between black and white chia seeds? Black ones are far less inconspicuous when jammed between your two front teeth.

So… turns out this recipie also works really well with sesame seeds sprinkled on top. The outcome of what happens when you have never seen LSA before and your sister doesn’t label the seeds in her pantry.

Well fancy that! I’ve been having regular old oat porridge with a few cranberries stirred in and soy milk on top. Keeps me feeling non-hungry til 3pm. Must try it with prunes and chia, seeing as I often have them in the cupboard anyway.
