hen I was a teenager, I prided myself on the fact that I had very few female friends. I’d proudly claim ‘Most of my friends are guys!’ and then I’d expect some kind of medal for being so awesome that guys liked me. What a dick I was. The older I get, the wiser I get and the more I realise how much I need my female friends. I love my guy friends but my girlfriends give me something different, something essential and irreplaceable. I’m separated geographically from most of my favourite women and I’ve been lucky enough to see almost all of them in the last month and it’s made me realise how essential they are in my life. Here are 7 reasons why your female friends are amazing… (your guy friends are also amazing but that’s an article for another day!).

1. Women are psychic
Women seem to know when you need them. They’ll text when you’re having a bad day or they’ll call you when they’ve noticed you’ve been absent for a while. They can also (annoyingly) tell when you’re not okay which is sometimes exactly what you need.

2. Women say what you need to hear
Sometimes you need someone to agree that your life has hit rock bottom. Sometimes you need to be told that you need to get your shit together. Women know when to soothe and they know when to scold. Most of my male friends (including Mr Smaggle) are straight shooters which I love but sometimes you need a healthy mix of a stern hand and a warm hug and women are ninjas at this.

3. Women touch
I’m a very touchy person for a VERY short period of time and then I get really uncomfortable. Occasionally, I need to be forced into touching. Women know when you need to be held, even if you try to push them away.

4. Women nurture
I live far away from my mother, which sucks but I have so many wonderful mother-like women in my life that would do anything for me at a moments notice. I love the men in my life, I really do but I always text my aunties before my uncles. They’re the bosses. And everyone knows it.

5. Women talk
And talk. And talk. I love that I can revisit the same conversation again and again and still find new things to add. Most men want to discuss a topic once and preferably, never again. I don’t ever want to stop talking about Les Mis, royal weddings and Benedict Cumberbatch and that’s why I love my lady friends so much.

6. Women remember
The name of that guy that you kissed in a club three years ago, your birthday, your favourite chocolate and the name of that boss that you really, really hated. When I catch up with my guy friends, I feel like I’m constantly reminding them of where we are in the story… my girlfriends get it straight away.

7. Women are warriors
Women are fierce. Women are tribal. If one of the tribe is wounded, no mercy will be shown. I’ve forgiven ex-boyfriends for infidelities that my closest female friends will NEVER forgive them for. Eight years with my perfect man Mr Smaggle means nothing to them… they still hate that dude that broke my heart Pre-Prince Charming when I was still in high school. It doesn’t matter how happy I am now… they were the ones that held my hand and wiped my tears when I was broken and they will always remember that.
