A Day In The Life: What I Get Up To 9 to 5

Confession? I’m a bit of a sticky beak. I think we all are in one way or another. I try to be the type of cool, chill person who doesn’t care about other people’s business but you know what? That’s not me at all, I really like knowing stuff. For example, if I’m in a cafe and there are people talking loudly at the table next to me about a heinous breakup, I’m 10/10 going to discretely turn my headphones off and listen. I bloody love a good story. I mean I wouldn’t read someone’s text messages or hack into their email (is that still a thing)or try to eavesdrop if someone was whispering (I might have lied about that one) but if an accidental opportunity presents itself, I’m so there. Like back when Facebook was brand new, a guy I knew from school added me and ended up being one of the first people I was friends with. He had a girlfriend at the time and they straight up had NO IDEA that other people could read the messages they left on each other’s walls. After two days of back and forth that would make your grandmother blush, I finally let them know it was public because I couldn’t keep watching them do it but until that point? It was very entertaining and I’m not ashamed to admit it was a touch thrilling when I got a notification saying one of them had commented on the other one’s wall. Don’t judge me. It’s like reality TV but not lame. Back in the day when I was a magazine junkie my favourite articles were always things like Take A Peak Inside Miranda Kerr’s Handbag! or A Day In The Life of Drew Barrymore. I’ve always loved getting an inside look at pretty much anything. I think that’s why I fell in love with blogs/blogging all those years ago. It was unbelievably cool seeing what Maryanne from Atlanta wore to her job as a dental nurse or what Kelly from New York cooked in her tiny apartment for her boyfriend’s parents who were visiting from out of town.

Even before I started blogging, I was always curious about people. Whenever I travelled to different countries I’d always look for the people carrying groceries on the street because presumably, they lived there. I’d watch them shop, buying toilet paper and shampoo and wonder about what their life was like living in London/New York/Paris/Bangkok. I’d want to ask them ‘What’s your job? Where do you live? What do you do on the weekends?’. I’ve always been really curious about how other people live their lives. I find it totally fascinating.

Having said that, I don’t really write about myself that much on Smaggle. I’m sure a few of you are scoffing right now but I promise it’s true. 95% of the posts I publish on Smaggle are useful. They’re full of tips, tricks, advice and recommendations. I use my life and stories to highlight these tips but you’ll rarely find a post on Smaggle that’s just a ramble about myself. Before I publish anything on Smaggle or my social media platforms, I ask myself ‘Is this useful?’ and if it’s not, I don’t publish it. That’s why my outfit posts always have fashion tips, shopping advice or an explanation as to why I picked one dress over another. Otherwise, it’s just a post of me existing, which is super boring to every except my mum.

So this is a weird segway into a day in the life of me. A listener of Straight & Curly asked for a rundown on what Kelly and I do in a day so we did an episode on it. I’m not sure if it will be useful to you but if it’s not, let’s just pop it in that 5% of the narcissistic content I occasionally do on Smaggle.

6.30 am – Wake up

7am – Drive to the gym

7.15am – Gym class

8.30am – Drive home from gym

8.45am – Shower

9am – Sitting down at my desk ready to start the day

9am to Midday – Work. This could include emails, writing blog posts, writing patterns for Crochet Coach, client work, prepping for recording Straight & Curly. Sometimes Mr Smaggle and I will go and get a coffee but not every day.

Midday to 12.30pm – Cook and eat lunch (eggs and pan-fried veggies) and take a short screen free crochet/podcast break

1pm to 3pm – Work. See above. Could be anything – whatever I’ve got on that day. Filming, writing, etc.

3pm to 3.30pm – Snack (yogurt and nuts or celery with peanut butter) and a screen-free crochet/podcast break

3.30pm to 6pm – Work. Same deal, whatever needs doing.

6pm – Leave home office and go for a walk/drive to get groceries for dinner. Mr Smaggle and I do this together it’s a nice break to leave the house and get some fresh hair.

7pm – Cook and eat dinner

7.30pm – Clean up kitchen, do a quick 30-minute spin around the house to tidy everything up

8pm to 11pm – Sit on the couch and watch whatever is on TV while working on fun stuff or we’ll potter around doing washing or cooking make ahead meals. We’re both really rubbish and just sitting still so if we’re ‘watching TV’ that usually means the TV is on in the background while we’re doing othe stuff. Mr Smaggle will usually do some designing and I’ll work on crochet patterns and projects. And yes, we watch actual free to air TV. There’s just something about having the choice taken away from us that’s so freeing. We like Border Security, SBS news, Seinfeld, Crimes That Shook The Nation, RBT, Planes Gone Viral, Gadget Man, The Gruen Transfer, Travel Man, The Checkout (RIP) and whatever awesome docos are on SBS. At the moment SBS is having a Friday 13th week, playing all the movies from that franchise each night for a week. It’s actually really awesome and we’ve been thoroughly enjoying it.

11pm – Go to bed and read for an hour before going to sleep.

I can usually function quite well on 6 to 7 hours of sleep a night but at the moment I’m really needing a full 8 hours so sometimes I’ll do lunchtime gym instead the morning. Depends on how the sleeping situation unfolded the night before.

Weekends usually involved a slow start to the morning, running errands, pottering around the house and maybe dinner with friends.

This week Kelly and I talking about our days, what’s important to us, prioritising things like healthy eating and exercise and how we fit it all in.

On that note… because I’m such a sticky beak – I’d love to know what your day looks like! What time do you eat lunch? Where do you work? Where do you live?

What does a day in the life of you look like?
