The Best Podcasts To Listen To While Working Out

I

’ve recently become a crazy podcast addict thanks to Serial. I hadn’t actually listened to any Podcasts before then but I’m naturally very fomo and everyone was talking about it so I had to get on board.

I’m now totally addicted to podcasts and I listen to one nearly every day, usually when I’m on the treadmill or walking around the city. They’re brilliant to listen to when you’re exercising so I’ve come up with a list of the best podcasts to listen to when you’re getting all sweaty…

You Must Remember This

This podcast is by Karina Longworth and each week she publishes a 20-ish minute episode about the forgotten history of 20th century Hollywood. One week there will be a story about Marilyn Monroe and her rise to fame and the next week might be about Sean Penn and his history of celebrity lovers. They’re gorgeous little snippets of factual history and they’re awesome for a quick session on the treadmill.

Criminal

Criminal is literally a podcast about people who have done the wrong thing. It’s not all blood and gore – there was a fantastic episode about a Venus Fly Trap crime ring in North Carolina where they literally stole Venus Fly Traps. Criminal is light and entertaining and definitely not so scary that you couldn’t listen to it walking around the park by yourself.

RadioLab

This podcast is about everything. There will be a them each week and there will be series of stories relating to that theme. Tip: Don’t skip a theme because you think it’s boring. I almost skipped the Football episode and it turned out to be one of my favourites. I usually listen to RadioLab when I’m doing weights – there’s something about the flow of the show that just works with repetitive actions.

Cracked

The team at Cracked is awesome. They kind of de-bunk popular culture myths and look at weird trends in art. For example there’s a fabulous episode about actor trademarks where they point out quite accurately that Tom Hanks is seen peeing in most of his movies. Cracked is great because it always leaves me thinking about weird stuff which is an excellent way to be distracted on the stair master.

This American Life

This one isn’t a hard sell – it’s basically an hour-long show where they discuss a range of interesting topics. One of my favourite episodes was the internet troll episode where one of the journalists conducts an interview with her worst troll – a guy who created a twitter account under the name of her dead father and tweeted the journalist that she was a huge disappointment to him. They have a new episode every week and I rarely miss one.

Bonus: Serial

If you haven’t listened to Serial – stop what you’re doing immediately and listen to it. I haven’t been as addicted to anything this badly since The Babysitter’s Club books. It’s actually just brilliant. I’ve also been listening to Undisclosed which is based on the same case but has no affiliation with Serial. It’s honestly not as good but it’s bloody interesting if you’re a creep like me and can’t get enough evidence in the Adnan Syed case.
