5 Ways To Wake Up With Seriously Fresh Looking Skin

This post is brought to you my Maybelline Dream Wonder
I

was looking back on some photos of me as a teenager the other day and my skin is freaking LUMINOUS. I don’t remember it being that amazing at the time but seriously it looks like an angel rubbed it’s glittery, gossamer, gold-tipped wing on my face. I’m not totally freaking out about premature aging yet (my parents are pushing 60 and they both barely look a day over 40) but I just miss that iridescent glow of extreme youth that seems to be getting harder for me to achieve these days.

I’ve been quite obsessed with my skin health routine recently so I’ve partnered with Maybelline this month (teenage Smags would be SO EXCITED about this collaboration!) to promote their Dream Wonder foundation (I’ll review it in detail later in the post but it’s like butterfly marshmallow kisses on your face) and I thought I’d share these 5 ways to wake up with seriously fresh looking skin.

1. Get religious about your night time skin care routine

I do this routine every single night without fail… unless I’ve been at a wedding in which case I probably can’t find my shoes let alone my anti-ageing night serum.

Cleanse
Apply night serum
Apply night cream
Apply eye cream

I’m not fussy about brands and I tend to mix it up a little bit but I always do these four things before bed every night and it’s made a huge difference to the appearance of my skin when I wake up in the morning.

2. Drink water in an obsessive way

I start every single day with a litre of lemon water – this is the very first thing I do. It not only hydrates my body but it also eliminates that early morning foggy head feeling and it makes my skin look less tired and dull.

3. Never, ever leave the house without sunscreen

This picture is of an American truck driver call Bill McElligot. He has never worn sunscreen in his life and this is what his face looks like after a lifetime of sun exposure to one side of his face through his truck’s window. Seriously. Sun screen. Every single day. The 50+ stuff and you can’t just use products with sunscreen in them. They certainly help but you really need to start with a solid base of killer sunscreen and then layer your SPF products on top.

4.   Actually get a good night’s sleep

Sometimes I don’t finish my work day until around 9pm and many people have kids awake until then too. What we should be doing is taking ourselves off to bed but we tend to muck around on our phones and binge watch TV shows. I look noticeably worse in the morning when I’ve been a bit of a rebel and stayed up late to finish the last season of Game of Thrones, so get your little butt to bed early if you have any hope of waking up the next day looking refreshed.

5.   Choose the right foundation

There is nothing more aging than caking on layers of thick make-up, even if you have decent skin. My favourite look of the moment is light foundation – I’ve been using Maybelline Dream Wonder and it’s seriously the silk pillowcase of the make-up world. It’s a really light foundation which I love because it doesn’t feel like I’ve smeared cement all over my face.

After foundation I skip mascara (Lara Bingle says it makes you look older), add some bright lipstick, a teeny dab of blush and a quick swipe through my eye brows with a brow definer. Done. The trick is all in the base though, you want something that’s fluid to apply, isn’t too matte (or shiny!), lasts a decent amount of time and provides even and light coverage. This stuff is perfect for medium coverage – when you want something a bit heavier than BB cream but a bit lighter than a heavy foundation.

I’ve just been dabbing it onto my palms and rubbing it all over my mug and it works great but if you want to be a bit professional here’s a video of how to apply it properly.

Oh and also you have the chance to win 1 of 500 Maybelline Dream Wonder foundations by entering here but I reckon you should just buy some. It’s pretty rad.
