It’s so exhausting every year trying to figure out what what I’m supposed to be wearing for each season and what item from last season I should absolutely not be wearing this season. I gave up caring many years ago and now I just wear whatever looks good on me, regardless of whether high street fashion is telling me that cargo print and cut offs are the flavour of the day. Here’s a list of items that I still wear proudly even though I’ve spied every one of them on a fashion ‘Don’t’ list in the last year.
5 Unfashionable Items You Should Still Wear
The Chunky Wooden Platforms
These are so 2009 but don’t let that stop you. They’re comfortable, they balance out a curvy figure and they add heaps of extra inches to your height to make you super statuesque. They’re aesthetically pleasing and if designed well should still be a wardrobe staple in ten years time. Clomp on I say. Clomp on.
The Victorian Neckline
A throw back from the late 90s Charmed era, a Victorian neckline is a lady like way to look dressed up without having your fun bags out on display. These little beauties haven’t graced the shop floors in almost a decade but if you have a few tucked away in your cupboard, why not dust them off and take them out for a spin? I bought both of this top in two colours almost 15 years ago from Just Jeans and I still wear them, particularly in summer. They provide a touch of unexpected elegance in a sea of spaghetti straps.
The Neon Lipstick
This rogue beauty product made a brief appearance in Summer 2011 but was swiftly replaced with autumnal shades of plum, never to be seen again. It was a lovely few months filled with bright orange, pink and peachy pouts and then suddenly it was back to classic reds and nudes. If you found the perfect punchy neon colour then you damn well keep wearing it. Go forth and prosper my lairy lipped friend.
The Scarf Turban
It feels as though we stopped giving ourselves permission to wear head scarves when Mary Kate Olsen stopped wearing them. Which is such a shame because they’re ideal for when your hair is making poor life choices. There’s also an indisputable glamour about a turban. They’re timeless and impossibly elegant. Don’t wait for this versatile accessory to come back into fashion. Wear it loud and wear it proud.
Low Slung Hip Belt
We can blame Sienna Miller for the inception of this boho trend but why it ever disappeared is beyond me. In summer there’s nothing more stylish than a maxi dress casually belted around your hips. Who cares if all the other ladies are wearing high waisted shorts and skinny belts? Let your inner flower child shine. Season after season.
