e’re all quite nostalgic deep down in our little souls. I’m obviously a supporter of the minimalist, non-sentimental movement that’s sweeping the internet at the moment (de-clutter challenge anyone?) but even I can’t sit in silence when a merciful DJ plays a 90s one-hit-wonder.
The windows go down, the volume goes up and I go full Celine on that situation. I’ve been doing some research on daggy 90s songs and these are just about my top 5 favourites…
1. Baby I Love Your Way – Big Mountain
This song is begging to be listened to in the shower. The next time you need to shave your legs or wash your hair pop this bad boy on in the background – it will make the time fly by.
2. What’s Up – 4 Non Blondes
This one is a definite listen-to-it-in-the-car-with-a-Slurpee kind of song. It’s also a good group song. Singing the ‘Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah…’ bit always sounds better if you have someone else to yell it with.
3. Breakfast At Tiffany’s – Deep Blue Something
The ultimate break up song. It’s an amazing thing to listen to when you know you’re holding on to something that’s over but you just can’t quite let it go. But you’ll always have Breakfast At Tiffany’s.
4. Sex and Candy – Marcy Playground
This was the ‘naughty’ song back in the day. My five year old niece is obsessed with the song Shut Up and Dance with Me and she always whispers the ‘shut up’ part because it’s rude. I can remember singing this song in grade seven simply so I could say the world ‘sex’. Some things never change.
5. Bitch – Meredith Brooks
Similar to Sex and Candy, Meredith Brooks’ Bitch existed purely so we could loudly scream ‘I’m a bitch, I’m a lover, I’m a child, I’m a mother…’ on the bus and no one could yell at us.
My awesome co-anchor at Sweet Teen Club (I’ve decided we’re co-anchors now like in Anchor Man. I LOVE LAMP!) Veggie Mama has put together an epic 90s one-hit-wonder playlist on Spotify and it’s the best thing that’s happened since Adore Beauty sent me a Tim Tam with latest purchase. Listen to this thing – it’s incredible.
The reason why she did this, is because this week we’re talking about 90s one-hit-wonders on Sweet Teen Club.
